NEW SERIES ON . . .
Look! A Squirrel!!!
They are everywhere!
Wherever I am, whatever I'm doing, they are there and they don't seem to be leaving. Actually, it seems as if though they are bringing friends.
What are they? Squirrels . . . .
Those distractions that take my mind in a different direction and lead to loss of thought and concentration. Those dreaded squirrels.
This Sunday, June 2, 2019, we will begin a new series titled "Seeing Jesus". The emphasis of this 8-week summer series is to challenge our concentration, to remove those spiritual squirrels that distract, and to focus on Jesus without wandering in thought or action.
Our text this Sunday will be Matthew 17:1-13 - the story of Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration.
In this "vision" (vs.9), we see Peter being Peter. Total loss of focus, wandering in his thoughts and actions.
Peter sees Jesus and Moses and Elijah transfigured right before his eyes and, to Peter, it was like seeing squirrels. Yes, I see Moses and Elijah as squirrels in Peter's challenge with concentration and focus.
I say this because Peter loses his focus on Jesus and wants to build three tabernacles: one for Jesus, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. While that seems like a nice thing to do to honor the Law (Moses) and the Prophets (Elijah), the problem is that Jesus is now just one of the guys. One of the three great voices of God in Biblical history. And this is a problem. So God the Father sets the record straight with what was apparently a pretty stern voice that says, in referring to Jesus:
"This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. HEAR HIM!" (Matthew 17:5)
Let me paraphrase God's intention in this passage:
"Peter - focus!!! Jesus is more than the Law (Moses), He's more than the Prophets (Elijah) - Hear Him!!! Focus on Him!!! Follow Him!!! Live for Him!!! Die for Him!!! And by the way, Peter, one tabernacle will do. One for Jesus alone for He alone is worthy. Now focus on Jesus, Peter!!!"
And we would do well to listen to God's voice as well. HEAR HIM!!! Listen to Jesus' voice. Know His teachings and follow His ways. Because as we will see Sunday,
It's ALL About Jesus!!!
And I love in Matthew 17:8 when the vision fades and Moses and Elijah are no longer there on the mountain, it says "they saw no one but Jesus only."
It is my prayer that we all will hear Him and see Him only.
But we must navigate through the squirrels and distractions.
Come out Sunday as we learn together how to make a big deal about Jesus and keep our focus on Him.
See you Sunday,
