Pastor Paul's Perspective

Remembering Our Savior

How's your memory?

I have said it before: "I have a good memory, but it's short."

Unfortunately, when it comes to the THE GOSPEL of JESUS CHRIST, many of us have good memories, but they're short. We remember the cross and remember the resurrection of Jesus Christ, but sometimes we forget about Christ's suffering. This is why Jesus Himself tells us to remember Him.

  • Remember His body that was broken.

"Take, eat, this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of me." 1 Corinthians 11:24

  • Remember His blood that was shed.

"This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." 1 Corinthians 11:25

The Apostle Paul adds in 1 Corinthians 11:26: "For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lords death till He comes."

Yes, communion is a great reminder for us who have good, but short, memories because communion reminds us of the suffering of Jesus Christ. His scourging, the nails in His hands, the sword in His side, the crown of thorns on His head. I need to be reminded of this because it's the whole Gospel that sets me free from the penalty of my sins. And Christ's suffering is the Gospel. Christ suffered so I can live.

But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5

Christ bled so I can be forgiven.

And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.
Hebrews 9:22

This Sunday is Easter Sunday 2019. I hope you will come out to our Son Rise Service at 8:30am under the big oak tree by the church's main entrance. There, under the tree, we will have communion and be reminded of another tree. The tree formed into the cross upon which Jesus died. Yes, on that cruel cross Jesus' body was broken and His blood was spilled. And I must not forget that until He returns.

So come out this Sunday. Here is the schedule:

8:30am - Son Rise Communion Service
9:15am - Coffee and refreshments in west wing of church
10:00am - Celebration Service - we praise the name of our Risen Savior, Jesus!

We will also be having an "On Ramps" class at 11:30am for any who are interested in knowing more about West Pines and how to get connected.

May we all rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, like those who found the tomb empty. (Matthew 28:1-8)

May we not miss the point of the person on the cross like the two on the Emmaus Road (Luke 24:13-35). At least until 24:31 when "their eyes were opened . . . "

Hope to see you Sunday,
Pastor Paul
