As our children made their entrance into this world, we often heard, "Oh, he/she looks just like his/her mom" or sometimes the dreaded, "just like their dad". Personally, I never thought a baby resembled anything other than maybe an alien, but that's just me.
I've also heard that when you're married to a person long enough you begin to look like each other. Poor Brenda . . .
But the thing is, I think that's true. When we are with someone for a long time, we do grow more alike in many ways. We often develop similar likes and dislikes, similar senses of humor . . . even similar mannerisms like the way we walk, or scratch our nose, or make noises . . .
If it's true that we take on characteristics of a person we've been with for a long time (and I think it is), then here's a question for you to think about: how long have you been with Jesus? How long have you been His follower, His disciple? For me, it's a relationship forged over the course of 40 years.
So, here's another question: do we look like Jesus after all these years? Do we look like Jesus in the way that we think, act, love, care, minister, live holy lives? Do YOU look like Jesus? Do you look more like Jesus today than you did yesterday?
This Sunday, June 4, we'll begin a new series on "Essentials of Discipleship: Looking Like Jesus."
Through this series, our goal is to become a better disciple (learner) of Jesus by listening to God's word, learning from the life of Jesus Christ, and looking more like Him today than we did yesterday.
This week we'll specifically be looking at the life of Jesus in regards to how He was able to have victory over temptation. We'll be looking at Matthew 4:1-11 along with Hebrews 3:7-15, Ephesians 6:10-17, 1 John 2:16, 2 Corinthians 3:18, and 2 Peter 1:3-4.
Come join us as we learn from Jesus how to have victory over temptation by:
- Being Spirit-led
- Taking temptation seriously
- Being a student of the sword (God's word)
- Being sensitive to the specific targets in your life
- Being surrounded by "ministers"
Hope to see you Sunday!
